Blackberry BIS Website Problems – Redesign of T-mobile (Solved)
Certain people have reported having issues managing their e-mail accounts on the BIS (Blackberry Internet Service) website for T-Mobile. This website is different than BES (Blackberry Enterprise Server) and those problems usually have everything to do with your company’s server running at the office or data center. If you have issues with BES, please contact the person in charge of your e-mail account. BES allows you to synch more than mail (BIS only synchs mail) such as calendar and contacts with Outlook or other enterprise contact management systems. It also gives administrators greater control over their users (erasing lost devices, setting passwords for devices) and can even push applications to devices in some cases.
T-mobile has gone through a redesign of their website and with most redesigns troubles arise. Folks that used to go to
http://t-mobile.com/bis
now see a totally different page with a fancy new website design. Now everything goes through my.t-mobile.com domain. That’s okay, except now they have to learn a new site and find the new links. To add to that problem; before you can change anything on your account you will need to “verify” the “primary account owner”. You can’t change one aspect of your account until you do this, not even view your “current” usage (in detail). You will see this “notice” once you login with your BIS information. If you have forgotten your BIS information you will need to click on the link above and then click the link “Forgot your password?”. There you will need to enter your phone number of your device and then it will text message your password (yes, txt message rates apply).
Now that you can login to the website we will need to “verify” your account. This is referred to as “Primary Account Holder”. You will get a “small” notice about this on the very first page after login if it *hasn’t* been verified. If this is the first time to login since the redesign (sometime in June of 2009, exact date is unknown since they rolled this out in “steps”) you will 100 percent need to verify the account.
You should notice under than “Name” of the account (and phone number) a notice of “NOTICE! The Primary Account Holder has not been identified. If you are the Primary Account Holder, you can identify yourself now. Identify Primary Account Holder.”
Click that link. You will need to know two things about the person who gets the bill. IT MUST be a person and it MUST be the person who gets the bill. For example, if you put your account in Grandma’s name…you will need her information. If it’s a company you work for, you will need to get with whoever handles the t-mobile bills as they will have this information.
You will need “Last four digits of your Social Security Number:” and “Your date of birth:”. You will NOT be able to access any blackberry BIS information until this has been confirmed. Once you confirm this, you can then continue with managing BIS.
(Now to the website): At the top is a menu bar (that is hard to navigate, and is really designed badly) as you will need to “hover” your mouse over “Connect and Share”. “Connect and Share” will turn blue once you have “activated” the menu. Then a menu pops below this that states “Configure E-Mail” among other options. You will need to click “Configure E-Mail”. If you hover over the top bar again, you will then see your options change. Go back and hover over “Connect and Share”. Told you it was confusing. Great job t-mobile.
Once you click on “Configure E-Mail” the page will change and a new “pop-up” will then show up. At the very bottom where it says: “Manage my e-mail Monitor your internet e-mail accounts on your phone. Use your phone to browse your e-mail. You can read, reply to, and compose e-mail messages whenever, wherever you are. Setup my e-mail”
You will need to click on “Setup my e-mail”.
Now you are on the BIS website! Yea! Pop-ups to critical parts of your website? (for t-mobile programmers/designers : Sure it’s an AJAX pop-up…but come on…don’t rely on AJAX for a critical part of your website). Now comes the fun part.
It will more than likely say: “We apologize, you do not have access to the My E-mail service. Please use the e-mail solution provided with your wireless handheld.”
It took me 5 days to figure this out (support line was no help at t-mobile). One, BIS on t-mobile does not support ANYTHING OTHER THAN Internet Explorer. Yep, with the new switch; BIS will show this message if you use anything other than Internet Explorer. Two, you will have to “change” your phone on the website from something other than Blackberry and then change it back to the correct phone. You must do this with Internet Explorer….too. Why because the option to change your phone only comes up in Internet Explorer. Guess if you are on an Apple machine you better fire up Windows or find a PC. Login to the BIS link above and hover over “Manage” in the top menu bar. Then click “Phone” under the sub menu. Click on the link “Not your phone?” under the phone’s picture (you will NOT get this picture if you are in anything other than Internet Explorer). Change your phone to something different….then change it back to your correct Blackberry model. I believe this is setting a cookie for the BIS website.
Now repeat the steps above from “(Now to the website)”. If you are in Internet Explorer you can see your accounts.. YEA! Now you add/remove them as well.
T-Mobile…we suggest you look at your plans for the redesign. This has caused a lot of issues and perhaps even re-think the people you hired for this make over.
